Great Area Rugs FAQ

How stain-resistant are your rugs?

Great Area Rugs is confident that all of our rugs are highly resistant to staining and will perform extremely well in normal to heavy use. Polypropylene in particular is a solution dyed and therefore inherently stain resistant and features very low moisture absorbency.

How do I keep my rug clean, and prolong its life?

  • Vacuum regularly.

  • Long ends may work to the surface after use or vacuuming. Never pull these ends out of the rug, clip them off evenly with the rug's surface. Clean spills and spots immediately. Never rub a spill, always blot to prevent fraying of the yarns.

  • Test cleaning solutions in a an inconspicuous area to be sure the cleanser will not damage the fiber.

  • Commit to periodic professional cleaning.

  • Wool fibers may be cleaned with a neutral detergent and dried quickly to limit yellowing or browning. Excessive agitation and excessive heat should be avoided as well as chemicals that can easily damage wool such as bleaches and alkalies.

  • Use a rug pad under your rugs. Please see our complete assortment of rug pads.

  • Rotating - No matter how dense the pile yarns or how well constructed the area rug, constant traffic patterns will begin to show; it is an inevitable fact of area rugs. However, this process can be slowed dramatically by rotating the rug at least once a year - twice if the rug is in a high traffic location. By rotating the rug, the traffic patterns are distributed throughout the entire piece rather than concentrated on one spot. This not only adds years to the rug but also allows the entire rug to wear at the same rate.
